Djeidi Gassiama’s and Anthony Musaba’s goals gave Sheffield Wednesday an important victory over Queens Park Rangers as they fought to stay in the Championship.

Isaac Hayden’s attempt clearance cannoned off former Paris St-Germain players Gassama into his own goal to give the Owls a lead.

Gassama then turned provider, as he teed Musaba up to smash past Asmir Begovic.

QPR’s Lucas Andersen hit a shot against the crossbar, but they couldn’t find a way to beat James Beadle.

Wednesday are only one point behind Huddersfield (21st), while QPR remain four points above drop zone.

The Owls, who also won the earlier match between the two teams at Hillsborough, scored late and took all three points.

Chris Willock and Sinclair Armstrong both had early shots but were unable trouble Beadle, the Wednesday goal.

Ian Poveda, who is always lively, whipped a cross into the QPR box for Josh Windass. He was in an excellent position but he couldn’t divert the ball.

Gassama replaced Poveda, who was injured before the half-time break. He almost made an immediate impact when he got behind the Hoops’ defence and fired wide.

Gassama’s goal was not just a stroke of luck. He danced between defenders, got to the byeline and crossed into the box.

Hayden’s clearance was aimed directly at Gassama. It bounced off Gassama into the net.

QPR was almost level in minutes, as Danish midfielder Andersen sent an effort crashing into the crossbar. Beadle had been beaten.

Armstrong scored late in the game as the Hoops sought an equaliser.

Musaba’s clinical strike in the sixth minute added time completed a perfect day for the visitors.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“I saw a strong reaction from my squad. I wanted to see an aggressive team that was fighting for the club and not looking too far into the future.

“Some players have shown in the past that they are not ready for this battle, but today I saw a group who was.”

“We changed shape and I replaced five players.”

“Gassama demonstrated how important he can become when he fights in this way, it was fantastic.”

QPR boss Marti Ciufuentes spoke to BBC Radio London

“It is a very disappointing day. I am of course responsible for my team’s performance. Today, we did not deliver the performance we wanted.

“We had more clear-cut opportunities than them overall, but they took the two and that is what counts in football.

“The first 60/70 minute were not very good, perhaps we should have conceded that goal to wake us up and understand the importance of this game.

“Everyone understands that 46 points will unfortunately not be enough [to stay up] The reality is that we still have a lot of games left to play and we must perform well.”
