Ipswich Town was overtaken at the top of Championship by Leicester after they were defeated in a tense East Anglian Derby by Norwich City.

Ipswich’s first Championship match without a goal in 15 matches, and their lack of a derby win since the 2009 season, sees them drop to the second position in the table.

With their eighth consecutive home win, the Canaries maintain their sixth-place position and keep their chances of making it to the play-offs.

Norwich started well, but chances to score were few and far between.

Axel Tuanzebe tackled Josh Sargent after he scored just past the half-hour mark.

Nunez was close to scoring with the free-kick that resulted from the defender being booked. The home fans were yelling for a red, but Tuanzebe insisted he had the ball. It was a warning.

Nunez scored from 25 yards with seven minutes left in the first half. Nunez’s low swerving attempt sailed past Vaclav hladky, who was disappointed.

The crowd erupted in anger when Sam Morsy and Sargent collided, with Sargent again bearing down on the goal. But the referee remained unmoved.

Ipswich’s top scorers took 63 mins to make a shot on target. But Kieffer Moore’s header was nothing more than Angus Gunn’s catching practice.

Sam Hutchinson scored a few moments later, but his effort was disappointingly tame.

Norwich’s counterattack threat was most evident through Sargent. Hladky had to block the shot of the forward on 70 minutes before he was able to find Borja Sainz. However, he couldn’t keep his effort down.

Ipswich’s day was summarized when Leif Davis found space inside the area to release Conor Chaplin, only to have his strike sail harmlessly in the stands.

Norwich boss David Wagner tells BBC Radio Norfolk:

“If I had said that the atmosphere at home was great in the past, I would not have been telling the truth. Today was special and wonderful.

“Everyone knows how a positive atmosphere can help a team to succeed. I thought it was a well-deserved win. It took Ipswich a long time to have many opportunities.

“The defenders’ hard work and fight was amazing. It was a fantastic afternoon to keep a clean-sheet at home, eight wins in a line, against the league leader and biggest rival.

“I am very happy to be a part of it. This atmosphere is exactly what we needed. Both teams worked very hard and were on a high level of tactic. The only thing I can say is that we didn’t win the game.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:

“I don’t think we reached the levels we wanted in a game such as this, but I do not think it was an extremely high-level game. To be honest, there wasn’t much to it.

“The game was comfortable for us” [in the] First 20 minutes. We started well, but then there was a 10-minute period where we were penalized for some decisions and we failed to see it through. The atmosphere changed when they scored the first goal.

“I don’t believe our intensity was at the level that we wanted from a physical perspective, this is definitely not effort.

“Everyone has the best intentions when they come here. This is our third difficult game in a single week. It was an emotional game with Southampton on Tuesday. I won’t get into our physical problems in the group. It was a big match, with a huge atmosphere. There were many different factors involved.”
