Liverpool beat Sheffield United by 3-1 at Anfield, Thursday. Jurgen Klopp and his team navigated a tricky ninety minutes to get back to the Premier League top.

Darwin Nunez gave Liverpool a lead after forcing an error by the goalkeeper, but Sheffield United showed their grit and equalized it with Conor Bradley’s goal.

When nerves appeared to be taking over, Alexis Mac Allister took the opportunity to score a stunning goal. Cody Gakpo also added some gloss to the scoreline.

All three teams still have eight games left to play. Sheffield United, ranked 20th, has 15 points and is 10 points from safety.

Newcomers in midfield driving title push

Alexis Mac Allister took some time to settle down at Liverpool. Dominik Szoboszlai’s form has fluctuated this season. Both players, who arrived in the summer, are now major reasons why Liverpool is top of the league. There are eight games left. Oh my God! Sheffield United is level with Liverpool! Gus Hamer started it and James McAtee crossed to the backpost. Hamer headed the ball against Bradley and the ball deflected past Kelleher. Wow. What a turn of events in the title race. Liverpool responds with a two-substitution and Salah, Gravenberch and Robertson are out.

Nunez’s goal is the difference between the two teams, and Liverpool has done enough to take a lead at half-time. The Blades created chances in the first and second halves to give Jurgen Klipp’s team something to think about. Can the Reds win with a quick second-half goal? They will do that…

Kelleher, a good stop

Kelleher saves Bogle’s low shot, and Liverpool clear. The longer the score stays at 1-0, the better chance the Blades have of grabbing a point.

Liverpool continues to press the issue

Sheffield United has a real problem getting on the ball. Liverpool is winning it back every time and causing trouble. It is a matter of if not when Liverpool will score their second goal. Grbic denies Szoboszlai’s latest attempt from outside the box.

What a strange way to start the game for Liverpool. Nunez charges down Ivo Gric’s clearance, and the ball hits him and trickles across the line. Nunez did well to chase that ball down. Grbic made a bad mistake but this is also a freak event.

The hosts are cranked through the gears

Liverpool are starting to play better. They are starting to create chances one after another. The latest was when Salah played in Nunez. The Uruguayan got past his man, but he couldn’t find Diaz. The pressure is building.

Salah’s shot was tipped.

Liverpool has woken up. Grbic claws away a cross, but it falls to Salah. He tries to lob it at him but Grbic tips the ball over for a corner.

Sheffield United should have been ahead in the first minute

McAtee should score from a long-throw flicked to him at the back post, but Kelleher saves it low. Ben Brereton Diaz is almost able to score at the backpost after the resulting corner. Liverpool must wake up. Fast. Sheffield United has a lot of chances.
