Coventry City remained in the hunt for the play-offs with a win over a Leeds United team that missed the opportunity to top the Championship.

Ellis Simms opened the scoring with his 18th of the season, before Haji widened Coventry’s advantage four minutes into second half.

Joel Piroe, a substitute for Leeds, scored his 12th league goal to give the visitors some hope. However, the Sky Blues held firm for a crucial victory that ended Leeds’ unbeaten 15-game league run.

Coventry remain four points behind the top six Championship teams, while Leeds slip to third place. They are two points behind Leicester City, who lead the Championship table.

Leeds knew they would be able to move above the Tractor Boys if they avoided defeat in the CBS Arena.

Leeds’ early push to get on the frontfoot was halted by Archie Gray.

Mark Robins’ side, with a top six finish in their sights, had a lot at stake. They scored in the ninth minute.

Wright broke forward, but Illan Meslier was able to save his shot. Simms scored from close range after Leeds failed in their attempt to clear the corner.

Meslier, who conceded just three minutes earlier, had to be alert in order to deny Callum O’Hare.

Leeds survived the storm, and gained control of the game as the first period progressed. Patrick Bamford was unable to finish off the play after Junior Firpo on the left and GeorginioRutter on the right.

Connor Roberts was brought in to replace Glen Kamara for Leeds at the half, but the team faced a mountain of a task after conceding a goal four minutes into second half.

Wright, who was able to coolly volley past Meslier using the outside of his right foot, received a deep cross from Josh Eccles.

Farke called Mateo Joseph and Piroe to the Leeds team as they were in a desperate situation after falling further behind.

After Daniel James’ deep right-side cross, Jake Bidwell was quick to clear his own line after a Crysencio Summerville attempt.

Coventry sat deeper, inviting pressure. Leeds took advantage.

Rutter did a good job of keeping the chance alive, before encouraging Piroe to score.

Wilfried Gnonto came on in the final stages to help Leeds get an equaliser. Piroe, however, wasted a brilliant opening three minutes before the end of injury time. Farke’s team lost for the first league time since 29 Dec. while Coventry bounced from their defeat against Cardiff City the last time around.

Mark Robins, the Coventry City manager:

“We have played today. We are not sitting behind the ball.

“We began to tire, and when we did that, we started to lose ground. This encouraged them to come after us.

“We were calm and collected in those areas. We were able to get the ball back and spend more time in possession.”

Daniel Farke, Leeds United manager

“We played against a very good opponent. It’s always hard on the road.”

“We had a better possession, which is good. We also had more expected goals and more shots on goal than them.

“We lost, this is the decisive moment.” Today was one such day.
