Michael Rust tops LaKeisha Haase

OSHKOSH ― Michael Rust is moving up to the bench.
The former court commissioner has been elected to serve a six-year period as a Circuit Judge for Winnebago County Circuit Court Branch 1, having defeated outgoing Common Council member LaKeisha Hasse in the Tuesday spring election.
According to unofficial resultsRust finished with 53% after receiving 15,699 votes, while Haase received 47% after accumulating 13,876 votes.
Haase failed in her latest attempt to return to the bench. She had lost a reelection campaign for Branch 4 two year ago, and then failed to unseat Branch 2, incumbent Scott Woldt, in a highly contentious 2023 election.
Rust’s elevation was a huge turnaround from the February primary, when he only garnered 28.2% of votes compared to Haase’s 46.2%.
After finishing as the top three vote-getters, restaurant owner Kris Larson and attorney DJ Nichols will fill the three vacant seats on the Oshkosh common council.
Larson won the race with 23.1%, while Nichols, Floam, and Thomas Asuma, each with 22.1%, and Kristopherulrich, each with 19.2%.
Nichols Floam Larson will replace Haase Deputy Mayor Lynnsey Erickson Michael Ford who have all decided not to seek reelection.
Kristopher Karns lost his seat on Oshkosh School District Board. Timothy Hess, the challenger, was able to join board president Beth Wyman as well as fellow incumbent Chris Wright in the top three vote-getters.
Wyman won the election with 28.1%. Hess came second with 25.3%. Wright was third with 24.7%. Karns was on the outside looking in, with 21.9%.
Steve Jungwirth won another term as mayor in Omro by defeating Suzette Davis Rice, a political novice. Jungwirth received 445 votes, or 68% of the vote, and defeated Davis-Rice (32%).
Austin Hammond, a 26-year-old council member from Menasha, became the youngest mayor ever in the City’s history after he beat out fellow councilmember Rebecca Nichols 102-to-one to succeed Mayor Don Merkes.
Hammond, who received 1,678 votes (51.6%) in Winnebago County and Calumet County, was just ahead of Nichols with 1,576 votes (48.4%).
Nichols also lost in the race for mayor of 2020 to Merkes. Merkes decided not to seek another term in office after spending 16 years as an official.
Following Tuesday’s massive shakeup, where all 36 positions on the Winnebago County Board were up for election, thirteen new supervisors will take their seats.
Next up is the partisan election on August 13, which will precede the general elections on Nov. 5.
