Aston Villa 3-3 Brentford – Late Watkins goal earns Villa a point
[ad_1]
Ollie Watkins saved a point for Aston Villa after they had surrendered an earlier two-goal advantage against Brentford in Premier League.
Watkins scored Villa’s 39th-minute goal, when he met John McGinn’s corner with a powerful headed that just barely cleared the line.
Morgan Rogers doubled their lead 32 seconds after restarting the game with a low, fine finish in the bottom corner.
Brentford scored three goals in the second half. Just before the hour, Mathias Jorgensen deflected Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross into his own goal.
Bryan Mbeumo, who had volleyed Sergio Reguilon’s corner into the net, equalised two minutes later.
Brentford scored in the 68th minuet when Yoana wissa tap in Reguilon’s low delivery across the goal.
Watkins prevented the visitors from achieving their first victory in nine matches, though. He headed in the equaliser 10 minutes before the end.
Villa are still fourth, three points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham despite having played two more matches. Brentford slip to 16th position, six points ahead of the bottom 3.
Watkins rescues sloppy Villa
Aston Villa was on its way to a second league win in just five matches when Rogers scored his first goal as a club to double their lead.
In nine harrowing minutes, Brentford managed to turn the game around with three textbook cross-shots into the box. Watkins was once again their talisman in the final stages.
The England striker is not only the Premier League’s top scorer (goals and assist), but his 28 goals are also the highest for a Villa player in a season. He has surpassed Dwight Yorke in 1995-96.
Aston Villa’s loss to Manchester City by 4-1 on Wednesday was a big blow. Villa’s positive Saturday was his return from a minor injury to the hamstring.
Unai Emery’s side will miss Douglas Luiz’s next two league matches after the midfielder was shown his 10th yellow of the season.
Villa hosts Lille in the Europa League Thursday before travelling to Arsenal three days later in the Premier League.
Brentford’s winless streak continues
Brentford has dropped more than any other Premier League team this season from winning positions.
Since beating Wolves 2-0 in the 10 February match, they have not won any competitions.
In that run, the Bees have produced fine performances against Chelsea Arsenal and Manchester United. At Villa Park on Sunday, they looked the superior side for most of the second half.
Mbeumo scored his first goal in four months, while Jorgensen scored his first goal with the club.
Mbeumo began the match ahead of England forward Ivan Toney. Toney came on in 81st minutes, but Brentford decided to stay back and let Mbeumo play.
The visitors are disappointed not to have held onto a fantastic comeback. They will be hoping to end their winless record at home when they play Sheffield United in seven days.
